Stat of the Day

The number of hours we spend sitting, on average, every day. That’s the majority of our waking hours - and a huge increase in just the last 50 years. (Harvard Health)

Learn

Office Saunas

I saw a recent post on LinkedIn about the corporate headquarters at Alo - which I didn’t know was an acronym for air, land, ocean.

It barely resembles an office - there’s a gym, infrared saunas and cold plunges, yoga studio (obviously), podcast studio, auditorium - just check out the video, it’s ridiculous.

@millsandrelo Alo Yoga has the CRAZIEST headquarters in the world. #alo #gym #la ♬ original sound - MILLS & RELO

This seems to run counter to most companies that are mandating return-to-work policies, but not investing in the office space.

Why is this so important?

Well for starters - in the past 50-60 years most of the economy moved from physical labor to a service economy that meant sitting on your a** all day.

Data from author Michael Easter shows that we burn 142 fewer calories at work than we used to - multiplied over the course of a year that’s over 35,000 calories and it directly tracks with the increase in waist circumference and metabolic disease.

With that said - movement isn’t the only thing that matters when it comes to corporate wellness.

McKinsey published a report (incidentally called “Working Nine to Thrive”) on 5 things that matter most to employee health:

👊 Social Interaction & Psychological Safety - do you feel like you belong to the group and are supported by your team and manager?

😌 Stress & Growth Mindset - are you able to be productive without being constantly overwhelmed with unrealistic demands?

🎸 Productive Activity - are you given the time and even nudged to spend time doing things you love or help you feel like your are contributing to the world - things like playing an instrument, traveling, or volunteering?

💰 Economic Security - is the job supporting your basic necessities?

💤 Sleep - (surprising to find in the study - yet, not surprising given what we know) does the company company prioritize sleep and recovery?

With this last note, the report noted that companies should align schedules and office space with natural light (circadian rhythm) and help shut down communication and screens in the evening - because the costs of bad sleep far outweigh the additional work being done during this time.

Executives probably think they are already doing this.

A study found that 90% of surveyed executives thought their company positively contributed to the health of employees.

But the results suggest otherwise - we’re back to pre-pandemic corporate wellbeing results (after initial jump from remote work in 2020).

It might seem like a “soft” investment, but focusing on employee wellbeing has a massive ROI.

According to the World Economic Forum, companies recognized for their health initiatives experienced a 115% growth in earnings per share compared to just 27% among their competitors.

For better or worse in this country, companies are responsible for employee healthcare - covering between $6-16K per year per employee and their family.

So how does it NOT make sense to make it part of your mission - help every employee be healthier today, than when you hired them??

And maybe just throw in an infrared sauna too 🥵.

Listen

Scott Galloway & Simon Sinek

Two guys talking life and leadership - it’s worth tuning in (even if it’s like me at 1.75x speed).

Great quote from Simon Sinek - “the best leaders think about the awesome responsibility to do what we can to help those around us rise.
