Issue #29: Smart Home
Good morning. It’s Friday, September 23rd. Today we're wrapping up everything about our HOME.
Plus, don't miss our poll of favorite "Home" songs at the end of the issue!
The number of internet connected devices (IoT) in the average U.S. household.
Your Home Base
Our home environment matters - it shapes our physical and mental health. It affects our mindset, how we eat, how we move, how we sleep, and how we connect with friends & family.
When you search for home of the future you’ll find terms like smart home, automated home, connected home. These are all probably accurate for what’s to come.
But technology is just a means to an end. We can use it to support our health or detract from it.
An Eight Sleep Mattress Cover that measures and adjusts to our body temperature to optimize our deep sleep and lights that automatically align with our circadian rhythm may enhance our ability to thrive.
But, WiFi and Bluetooth connecting hundreds of IOT devices may create chaos in our already overworked brains and may disrupt our hormones.
The same group that developed the LEED sustainability certification for buildings has now created a WELL Certification. To date this has been for offices and multi-family buildings, but they are now working on a single-family set of standards.
We aren’t getting into the weeds of what it takes to achieve this certification (but you can read it if you ever have trouble falling asleep), but the WELL framework helps consider how we should create our home base.
Does your home or whatever you bring into your home improve:
The Air You Breathe
The Water You Drink
The Food You Eat
Your Circadian Rhythm (automated lighting)
Your Mindset (sense of calm/comfort)
Your Thermal Comfort (i.e., ambient temp)
How You Move
The Sound You Hear (or Don’t Hear)*
How you Connect with Loved Ones
At the end of the day - take care of your home base.
*Hearing develops before vision in the womb. It is our primary sense when it comes to fight or flight to sense danger. So sleeping with noise (definition = unwanted sounds) will prevent our nervous system from fully shutting down and allowing us to get into that deep sleep - Eight Sleep Mattress Cover or not.
